He exhibited an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD) of an open mouth, lips apart resting posture often referred to as Lip Incompetence and can distract from a pleasing facial appearance as seen in the BEFORE photo. The Primary CAUSE of OMDs is nasal airway problems (not a tongue tie). The EFFECT is an open mouth and low resting posture of the tongue resulting in improper orofacial development, misaligned teeth and distorted speech patterns which is why ALL patients of Dr. Honor Franklin at Honor Franklin Myofunctional & Speech Clinic are referred to an Allergist and ENT BEFORE any therapy is ever initiated. A referral to an ENT and Allergist (who understand OMDs) revealed he needed an Adenoidectomy and nasal turbinectomy and had SEVERE allergies requiring allergy medication twice a day and allergy shots!! He couldn’t breathe!! Dr. Franklin never wants to jump in and try to treat the EFFECT(incorrect resting posture) and ignore the CAUSE ( nasal airway problems)! Look at his improved facial appearance after 10 visits over 7 months using the Zickefoose Lip Exerciser-ZLE while performing TWO exercises ONCE a day. He looks healthier and more alert because he can nasally BREATHE 24/7/365! #Musthaveapatentnasalairway

Look at the improvement in this 10 year- 11 month old boy’s lips following completion of the Mini-orofacial Myofunctional Therapy program created by Dr. Honor Franklin at Honor Franklin Myofunctional & Speech Clinic consisting of ONLY TWO EXERCISES ONCE A DAY using the Zickefoose Lip Exerciser-ZLE. Initially, his exhibited a chronic open mouth posture and low, forward resting posture of his tongue. against his teeth. His dentist had used a tongue reminder habit appliance which did not work because it’s purpose is to keep the tongue away from the teeth but doesn’t close the lips or teach the tongue where it should rest or address any nasal airway concerns. He exhibited chapped lips and when asked to close his lips, he exhibited lip tension. After evaluations by an ENT and Allergist to ensure he was able to achieve a patent nasal airway on a consistent basis, he was enrolled in therapy and completed therapy in 17 visits over a 13 month period.

After evaluations by an ENT and Allergist to ensure he is able to achieve a patent nasal airway on a consistent basis, he was enrolled in therapy . Look at the improvement in his dental occlusion after being seen for 17 visits over a 13 month period. It works!!! NOTE: Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy never takes the place of orthodontics.

This is Part 3 of my 46 year old female patient referred by the orthodontist, Dr. Evan Wilson of Wilson Orthodontics.

This is Part 3 of my 46 year old female patient referred by the orthodontist, Dr. Evan Wilson of Wilson Orthodontics. Notice the gradual improvement in her lips and chin. Initially, she presented with an open mouth posture and low resting posture of her tongue due to nasal airway issues. A referral to an ENT revealed no nasal obstruction but a referral to an Allergist revealed she had strong Perennial Allergic Rhinitis and Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis allergies and allergy medication was prescribed to control her allergies. Once she was able to control her allergies by following the allergists’s recommendations precisely, she was enrolled in Dr. Honor Franklin‘s Traditional Formal orofacial myofunctional therapy program with our goal being to teach a normal oral rest posture of the tongue and lips and normal swallowing pattern in order to assist the orthodontist in achieving a stabilized occlusion. Kudos to a terrific patient!
